Worship through obedience

If creation worships God by its very existence, do we also worship God by merely existing in His will?

Sacrifice and offering you did not desire—

but my ears you have opened[c]—

burnt offerings and sin offerings[d] you did not require.

7 Then I said, “Here I am, I have come—

it is written about me in the scroll.[e]

8 I desire to do your will, my God;

your law is within my heart.”

9 I proclaim your saving acts in the great assembly;

I do not seal my lips, Lord,

as you know.

10 I do not hide your righteousness in my heart;

I speak of your faithfulness and your saving help.

I do not conceal your love and your faithfulness

from the great assembly.

1 Samuel 15:22-24

22 But Samuel replied:

“Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices

as much as in obeying the Lord?

To obey is better than sacrifice,

and to heed is better than the fat of rams.

23 For rebellion is like the sin of divination,

and arrogance like the evil of idolatry.

Because you have rejected the word of the Lord,

he has rejected you as king.

Jeremiah 7:21-23

21 “‘This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Go ahead, add your burnt offerings to your other sacrifices and eat the meat yourselves!

22 For when I brought your ancestors out of Egypt and spoke to them, I did not just give them commands about burnt offerings and sacrifices,

23 but I gave them this command: Obey me, and I will be your God and you will be my people. Walk in obedience to all I command you, that it may go well with you.

The greatest form of worship is obedience. So many Christians live in absolute disobedience in God but they fulfil the actions of worship without actually obeying God. Fulfilling a checklist of to-do lists will not satisfy God. He is satisfied by a laid down life, and posture of humility in which he is the king and we are his subjects. The animal kingdom does not have much to do, it simply acts in a nature that is consistent with God’s charge and instruction. Lions roar, birds sing, sheep bleat, camels grunt, frogs croak, hyenas laugh and each of these animals will not exchange its nature for another’s.

God created man for the purpose of relationship, each relationship He has with all of his children is unique and purposeful. At basic, to worship him I must be able to relate to him as he made me and give him a unique relationship that is true to me. You can never worship God in falsehood; it is like a cow roaring to get the attention of God. In fact when we try to be like other people and try to be who we are not, we are rejecting who God made us to me, we are offering false sacrifices in disobedience to who God made us to be. In obedience, I please God. In disobedience and pretence, we cannot worship God.
