Understanding Faith

One of the most taught teachings in the church is the teaching of faith. With all beliefs and speculations about faith it is quite amazing how Faith is often substituted for positivity of hope. Most Christians cannot tell faith and hope apart, and even though hope is vital and helpful; it is NOT faith. I understand that research has shown that Christians live on average 7 years longer than non-Christians because of the power of Hope. A positive outlook on life will definitely help you and give you some joy in life and in the future. Positivity will give you longer life, less stress and anxiety which is great for your psychological and physical health, BUT this is still not faith.

Hebrews 11:1-2 puts this into absolute clarity

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good testimony.”

I don’t want to confuse this and make it more complicated than it needs to be but this scripture gives us simple insight into two word; Evidence and substance.

Faith is ultimately evidential and substantial, what this means is that you have tangible (substance), absolute proof of what you believe. It leaves no room for doubt or uncertainty, because you have proof (evidence) of concept. The desire from this devotional is to make Christian concepts easy to understand and easy to follow so picture faith this way. Imagine you went to a store and you purchased a brand new car, after you have transacted the dealer assures you that they have ordered your car and it will be delivered in a week to your home address. Even though you take a taxi back home to spend another full week as a pedestrian, you have no doubt in your mind that you are in-fact a driver. It is not the presence of the car that fuels your assurance but it’s the receipt in your pocket. The rest of the world has to catch up to your reality, in your eyes you are already a driver and no one can say otherwise to you. Faith is our confidence in the receipt of the word of God. I have no doubt that God will fulfil what he has said concerning my life because his word already constitutes receipt of his guarantee and assurance of delivery.

  • Father help my unbelief (Mark 9:24) help my doubts, help my uncertainties. Teach me to live a life of faith.
  • Teach me to rely less on myself and man, teach me to have faith in you and your word.
  • I choose to press closer to you today, to stand firm in your word concerning my life and to believe in your report concerning my joy, life, ministry, marriage, children, home, finances, job and every area of my life
  • Give me a heart of expectation and anticipation of your words in pure certainty of your promise. To wait on you in faith concerning your promise.
