13 Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”), 14 that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
A fundamental Christian principle must be perfectly understood for us to really digest what today’s focus scripture is saying to us. We were all born under the law and we were all servants to it. The bible tells us that the law is perfect in itself but we were not perfect ourselves. Instead we were condemned and judged by it and for that reason we lived under a curse. The law itself is not the curse, but the curse is the penalty of our failure to keep the law. This is significant because 21st Century Christians think that the law is evil and impure. Jesus says he didn’t come to do away with the law but to perfect the law, he was the fulfilment of the law. There were about 600 laws and we couldn’t keep one of them, it demanded that we must be perfect but that was impossible and futile. We could never measure up to the practices, ordinances and requirements of the law and so we received the penalty and consequence of our shortcoming; the curse.
Jesus redeemed us by becoming a curse for us… This means simply that he took your place and he took your consequence and your shortfall therefore allowing you to take a different consequence in righteousness and grace. The curse of the law and death fell on him so that you could have the law of life and grace. We are no longer doomed under the law, we have received promise through grace. Where the consequence of our sin would have led us to die, we have received the promise of the Spirit through faith. Doing good behavior will not give you promise, faith will bring you into promise. His mercy and grace has preserved me and taken me out of the judgement of God, remember that God is not out to punish me, he is not out to hurt me. God has made a way for me out of the depths of darkness and he has pulled me out of an impossible situation, of certain death and he has taken me into a place of promise. A spiritual inheritance, a certain guarantee, a better law, and as a result of that I am a child of Abraham. All of Abraham’s blessings are mine, I am under the same promise and the same covenant that God gave to Abraham.
Father we thank you that your promises are yes and amen, that you never fail, and your promises never change.
All of Abraham’s blessings are mine, I am delivered from the curse of the law and I am a recipient of the promise of the spirit by Faith.
I am not cursed; the curse has been lifted off me. Jesus took it on my behalf, I am at peace with God. He has fulfilled all the requirements of the law that I could not keep and he took the consequences away from me.
